Tree Lighting Ceremony
The 2005 Capitol Christmas Tree was lit on Thursday, December 8th at 5:00 p.m. (3:00 p.m. New Mexico Time), by Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, New Mexico Senator, Pete V. Domenici, and Student Winner, Steven Castillo from Pecos Elementary School in Pecos, New Mexico.
Entertainment before and after the lighting ceremony was provided by Laguna Pueblo Dancers and Mariachi Camino Real.
The December 8th lighting of this year's Christmas tree draws an end to the Forest Service Centennial year. On July 1, 2005, one-hundred years ago, the Forest Service was created as an agency with a unique mission: to sustain healthy, diverse, and productive forests and grasslands for present and future generations. As events of this 100th anniversary are documented, this year's Capitol Christmas Tree, and everyone involved will become part of Forest Service history.
The tree will be lit every evening from December 8th through January 1, 2006 from sundown until 11:00 p.m.
